Common tax questions

The Marketplace issues Form 1095-A with information about your coverage and any advance premium tax credit. Your preparer uses it to complete Form 8962 when required. Review it for errors and ask the Marketplace for corrections before filing. Read the IRS premium tax credit guidance.

Yes. Your final credit depends on your tax-year circumstances. If advance payments differ from the credit allowed, your refund or balance due can change. Report income and household changes to the Marketplace during the year and review the result with your preparer.

Some premiums may qualify, depending on your circumstances and how they were paid. Itemized medical deductions and the self-employed health insurance deduction have different requirements. Amounts paid pre-tax or covered by a tax credit cannot simply be deducted again. See IRS guidance on medical expenses.

Death benefits paid to a beneficiary are generally excluded from federal gross income. Interest received is generally taxable, and exceptions can apply. Policy withdrawals, surrender proceeds and ownership transfers can have different treatment. Read the IRS life insurance guidance.

Tax-deferred does not mean tax-free. Tax treatment depends on the contract, how it was funded and the distribution. Earnings may be taxable, and early distributions may trigger additional tax. Ask a tax professional to review your contract and tax forms before withdrawing.
