Health insurance questions
When can I enroll in health insurance?
Marketplace enrollment is available during Open Enrollment. Outside that window, certain life changes, such as losing qualifying coverage, getting married or having a baby, may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. Timing and eligibility depend on your situation. Check enrollment rules at HealthCare.gov.
How do I compare plans beyond the monthly premium?
Compare the deductible, copayments, coinsurance and out-of-pocket limit, along with the monthly premium. Consider your expected care and prescriptions, and check which services count toward each limit. A lower premium does not always mean lower total costs. Learn about total health care costs.
Will my doctors and prescriptions be covered?
Check the specific plan’s provider directory and drug list before enrolling. Confirm participation with your doctor and insurer, and review prescription costs, pharmacy networks and any authorization requirements. Networks and covered drugs can differ between plans from the same insurer.
What if my income or household changes?
Update your Marketplace application promptly when your income or household changes. These changes can affect financial assistance. Advance premium tax credits are reconciled on your federal tax return. Our tax questions page explains the connection.
Life insurance questions
What is the difference between term and permanent life insurance?
Term insurance covers a specified period. Permanent insurance is designed for longer-term coverage and may build cash value, provided the policy’s requirements are met. Compare premiums, guarantees, limitations and how long you need protection before choosing.
How much life insurance should I consider?
Start with the income your family depends on, outstanding debts, ongoing expenses and future obligations. Then review existing coverage, available assets and a premium you can sustain. Your needs can change as your family and finances change.
What should I ask before buying a policy?
Ask which benefits and premiums are guaranteed, what may change, which exclusions apply and what happens if payments stop. For cash-value policies, request an explanation of costs and illustrated values. Review the policy documents before deciding.
Should I cancel my existing policy when shopping for another?
Review your current policy before replacing it. A new policy may have different costs or requirements, and a health change can affect eligibility or premiums. Do not cancel existing coverage before the replacement is issued and in force.

Annuity questions
What is an annuity?
An annuity is an insurance contract used for long-term goals, often retirement income. Payments can begin soon or later, depending on the contract. Guarantees depend on the insurer’s financial strength and claims-paying ability.
How do annuity types differ?
Fixed annuities provide contract-based interest. Fixed indexed annuities link interest to an index with limits. Variable annuities and registered index-linked annuities can lose value. Features, fees and risks differ; review the specific contract.
Can I withdraw money whenever I want?
Access depends on your contract. Early withdrawals may trigger surrender charges, contract adjustments and taxes or tax penalties. Ask about withdrawal allowances and how taking money out affects future benefits.
Does an annuity inside an IRA add tax deferral?
An annuity inside a tax-deferred IRA does not provide additional tax deferral. Evaluate its other benefits, costs and restrictions, and ask a tax professional how distributions would be treated.
